The treaty of Tordesillas was an agreement between Portugal and Spain over the aquisition of land in the New World.
It was put in place to divide trading and colonizing rights of the new world.
After Christopher Columbus returned from the new world there was conflict over the newly found land.
There was confusion over the newly found land in the new world, and who it should belong too
The land found by Columbus in 1492 is what brought up the confusion and need for a treaty.
It was signed in June of 1494

Spain and Portugal could not really keep the land that they acquired through the treaty.
